How to Clean Your Alpaca Products

  • Wash the product in cold water either by hand or in the gentle cycle in the washing machine
  • Use only minimal detergent
  • Use whatever gentle soap (even baby shampoo) you would use for your fine garments
  • NEVER use warm/hot water
  • Consider placing the product inside out and placing it in a laundry bag to avoid the item getting stretched and losing its shape.
  • Do NOT place the item in the dryer. This will cause the alpaca products to shrink and felt very significantly!
  • Squeeze the garment gently, do not wring, and blot it on a towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Lay item flat to dry
  • Store folded flat
  • Do not hang your product – not wet or dry
  • Surface soil and most stains can be easily removed by brushing with a lint brush or damp sponge.
  • If given a 24 hour rest in between wearings, odors will fall out
  • If you have an item that is fluffy, you can give it a good brushing.
  • For items like rugs and cushions, you may prefer to get your product professionally cleaned by a cleaning specialist.
  • Items that have the highest percentage/content of alpaca are the most likely to shrink. This is especially true with alpaca socks. Please take care using the above instructions to ensure that you do not have shrinking.

How to Store your Alpaca Products

  • It is best to store your product flat
  • Do NOT hang, drape, or place the alpaca product on a hook. This will cause it to lose its shape.
  • It is best to place your alpaca products in a sealed, but breathable bag in a cool place to avoid moths.
  • Never put the alpaca product away dirty with perspiration, hair gel, food stains, etc. as this will attract moths.
  • Do not store your products with cedar oil as it can dry out your product.

Why Wear Alpaca?

  • Alpaca fiber is extremely soft – as soft as cashmere
  • Alpaca fiber is warmer than wool.
  • Alpaca fiber is lightweight. The alpaca fiber contains a hollow core so it is lightweight and warm.
  • Alpaca fiber is hypoallergenic because it does not contain grease or lanolin.
  • Alpaca fiber does not stain easily, so splits are easily blotted up.
  • Alpaca fiber is extremely strong and resilient. It does not tear easily.
  • Alpaca fiber does not induce static electricity so it is less likely to attract dust.
  • Alpaca fiber is water resistant so it wicks moisture away from the skin.
  • Alpaca fiber is flame retardant.
  • Alpaca fiber is all natural and renewable
  • Alpaca fiber comes in a multitude of colors, which can be dyed.
  • Alpaca fiber is less irritating than other fibers.
  • Alpaca fiber has excellent durability.
  • Alpaca fiber has half the moisture of wool, so it feels better against the skin.
  • Alpaca fiber is naturally soft and shiny.
  • Thousands of years ago, Incas reserved alpaca fiber wear exclusively for royalty!

How do you get the Alpaca Fiber/Sheep Wool?

Once a year, the alpacas, llamas, and sheep are sheared. No animals are injured in the process. This is a very necessary step in maintaining healthy animals. When we remove the fleece/wool from the animals they are much cooler. It would actually be inhumane not to shear our alpacas, sheep and llamas. It is this fleece and wool that is used to produce the significant majority of the items that we sell.

Please note: no alpacas, llamas, or sheep are ever killed for their fleece/fiber/wool. Alpacas, llamas, and sheep can all live for 20 years. They will be sheared yearly as they continue to produce fleece/fiber/wool even when they are at the extreme end of life.

What is the difference between Royal Baby, Baby Alpaca and Super Fine Alpaca fiber?"

Royal baby alpaca, baby alpaca, and super fine alpaca are all industry standard classes of fiber and refer to the Average Fiber Diameter (AFD) that is used in alpaca products. Royal Baby Alpaca fiber is the finest fiber with an AFT of less than 20 microns (1 micron = 1/25,000 inch). Baby Alpaca fiber is the next finest with an AFD of 20.1 – 22.5 microns. Super Fine alpaca fiber is slightly coarser with an AFT of 22.6-22.9 microns.

Neither Royal Baby Alpaca fiber nor Baby Alpaca fiber necessarily comes from baby alpacas. For example, here at Eagle Eye Farm, we have numerous alpacas between the ages of 2 and 3 years old that have fiber with AFD under 20 microns (Royal Baby Alpaca) fiber. We also have older alpacas that have fiber in the range of 20.1 and 22.5 microns (Baby Alpaca) fiber. Many years ago, only baby alpacas produced this fine fiber. However, not the quality of alpaca fiber is so good that older animals produce this superior fiber.
